And Away We Go...
Household Tips for the on-the-go Nursing Student
CLEVER IDEAS WORTH KNOWING
Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of Spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.
For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
To Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.
Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in A microwave with a cup of water.. The increased moisture will keep the food Moist and help it reheat faster.
Newspaper weeds away
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, Put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and for- get about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not Get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-t ip t o pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.
Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... At DA! ..... Static is gone.
Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup.. Next, add your ingredient, such As peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Re-opening envelopes
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include s om ething inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.
Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material .. I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well ..... the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free ... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box ... well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very longtime (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share! Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it .. the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!
**For those of you who read my Confessions post; isn't it great to find out that there are other uses for Fabric Softener Sheets??? Woo Hooo! GET OUT OF HERE MOSQUITOS, I need to stay fresh!!**

Blog Feed: That's Just Unsanitary!
Hey guys! So here is a post made by one of my bloggy friends @ Crash-Course In Nursing that I love to read who is currently a nursing student. We thought it would be great to get feedback of how some of you in the field or headed into the field of Nursing would react or care for the man who needed treatment in the post? For those of us who are newbies entering the field, we need to be aware of all aspects of the field and hopefully be ready to bring forth the effort it takes to be an awesome Nurse... It is hard-work, takes perseverance, dedication and a will to carry out quality work. Some won't cut it, some will go above and beyond. Which one are you?
Share your feedback, thoughts, critiques. We as (hopefully future) nurses need to be prepared...
That's Just Unsanitary!
Friday was another 12 hour shift in Midsize Non-Trauma Center's ED, and while there were only two people I would actually be able to label "True Emergencies" all shift, there were some VERY interesting cases in other ways, which was impressive given that when I walked in at 645, there were NO PATIENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT. I curled up on one of the swivelly chairs and DIDNT SAY ANYTHING for fear of jinxing it, but as predicted, the "quiet" (oh no! i typed it!) only lasted about half an hour.
The first truly bizarre/awful case of the day was a 500 some-odd pound man, brought in for, ironically "failure to thrive". This MUST only be a social designation, since in neonates "failure to thrive" means they're LITTLE...not this particular gentleman's problem. His problem was bilateral cellulitis of the lower legs. REALLY GROSS cellulitis of the lower legs. They were wrapped in biohazard bags by the medics, who promptly ran outside and started shaking their clothes off on arrival...which is NEVER a good sign. Apparently this gentleman had ROACHES LIVING IN HIS SKIN FOLDS.
The truly odd thing about this large man was that he was COMPLETELY LUCID, and convinced that we were "making a big deal out of nothing!". He was caked in dirt, apparently from "pulling himself across the floor" which he didn't seem to think was a problem in and of itself, and was FURIOUS that he'd been taken out of his house. It took us (me, my partner and three Real Nurses) almost an hour to get him all cleaned up. He was really quite polite, and seemed lucid, albiet with a HUGE blind spot about how bad his house and hygeine really were. He was admitted to med-surg, for placement in assisted living, and may lose both his legs to gangrene.
I learned that the smell of gangrene actually does not upset me nearly as much as I had originally thought. Good to know! On the other hand, I have also learned that I will be itching for the rest of any day when a patient has bugs.
Its tough to know how to feel about a patient like this- on one hand, you KNOW they cannot take care of themselves, because...well...he was dragging himself across the FLOOR in a filthy house! But on the other hand, now we're taking away all his perceived independence. Tough call.

Confessions... Shhhhhush please
So as you know I was given the Honest Scrap Award on Saturday - and I must say boy were the qualifications hard. Alrighty, here goes the moment we've all been waiting for: my 10 confessions that I must let you in on.
- Deep down inside of me, there is a woman who is a size 8, but she'll never get out because I love food. I have such a weakness for food, cakes, cookies, Baskin-Robbins' double chocolate milkshakes. I really, really want to be skinny.
- I hate when my husband does the laundry because he never folds the clothes and I hate folding clothes more than I hate passing up double chocolate milkshakes.
- I'm afraid I won't have enough friends to pass this on to.
- Needles, Vomit, Blood and Old People scare the heck out of me, but I want to be a nurse.. HUH?
- I'm very outgoing, but I think I smile too much which may make me come off as desperate or wanting to be acknowledged. One or the other it's still not cool..
- I need my husband to hold my butt in order to go to sleep at night. (you did say this was the Honest Scrap award right?)
- I'm addicted to Plug Ins & Febreze Noticables. I stand in the fragrance aisle for hours at a time, I'll buy different scents, but then I'll get mad because I didn't stick with my favorite plug in - Clean Linen.
- Call me OCD - enough said
- It drives me crazy that my flowers on here are behind (in the background) my blog, but I refuse to edit and lose my header because I love it so much.
- Have you ever gone the extra mile to prevent something from happening? Well look here, I do, OK? I wear fabric softener sheets in my pockets and I stuff them anywhere I can on my kids (sometimes I sneak them in my hubby's pockets too or in his pillowcase) so we'll always smell fresh even if we are a little stinky.. lol
Now I need to decide on who I am going to award, and my how much fun that is going to be. Let me think on it! I'll get back to ya on that one...
Well now that I have gotten through that, let me just tell ya trying to wean a two year old off of the pacifier better known as THE PACI, is horrific! My son screamed so much, I got scared... lol OH MY GOOSHHHHH! I hope I have both ear drums in tact, probably not. That was definitely an Ahhhh moment, but he finally fell asleep and I thought twice about the Lorazepam I had in my hand..Umm so totally kidding on that one, but definitely would have been justified (don't you judge me, I know what you do at night.. lol). I probably can't wait up for my husband to get in from school tonight, I wouldn't be good company anyway, besides my nerves are SHOT!

Why, Why, Why?
In lieu of the daily Just Because.. one of my co-workers sent me a why, why, why email. I thought it was hilarious!! I am posting here to share..
Why, Why, Why, Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead?

When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle (heel) with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, 'It's all right?' Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, 'That really hurt, why don't you watch where you're going?' (I did say, "What in the hell are you doing?" to a man who did this to me in WalMart.)

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

Just Because...
Why is it that a person who earns 6+ figures will argue about getting free parking?... just because.
Why does the cable, internet, and phone not work when there is a storm coming, but it hasn't begun to rain?... just because.

Sensitivity - We lack it...
Day 1 (Monday)
Have I mentioned I am on weight watchers? Well I used to weigh 280 pounds after my daughter was born and now I am way down in the low 180's. Good huh? Tell me about it, it would be even better if my husband (who might I add would be a size 0-2 if he were a woman)wouldn't tempt me with my favorite burgers and milkshakes, well he did good this time and didn't get the milkshake, but NO instead he brings home the warm, crispy baked doughy goodness with extra powdered sugar on it, the one that tastes like funnel cake at a theme park, woo those are so good, but I digress, here he comes, up the stairs (since he was just getting in from class)with the hot, smelling good bag, aghh I wanted to kill him, hello it was 10:30 P.M.! Hey, I had done well the entire day, ate my salads, counted my points, drank my water, walked/jogged 2.25 miles with my co worker and you bring this home, are ya freaking kidding me! I ate every last one, lol! And kissed him for it afterwards. He knew exactly what I needed; mentally, but my size 14 rumpus surely didn't! Humgph! Sensitivity issue #1
Day 2 (Tuesday)
Did I mention how great of a husband I have? and how crappy of a wife I am? Driving home from work, talking to my hubby on the phone; a routine we faithfully live by, laughing it up, haahaaa, baaahhhaaaa, everything is funny. Smooth ride home, no traffic, just nice. Alright this is going to be a nice night. Get home, pull into the garage, huh? do I hear music playing, slow music? It's 5:30 P.M. surely my little rugrats are still up running around. Walk inside, dinner is done (it normally is anyway, so no big surprise there, told you I have a great hubby)lights are dim, the kitchen is clean, WTH?? blinds are drawn, no kids around and my husband is on the sofa shirtless. See where I am going with this? Give hubby a big kiss, totally surprised, loving the mood, and the moment. In the midst of it all, I say ohhh let me run upstairs and kiss the kids. WTH! Have I lost my mind? Why would you want to kiss the kids at that moment? As I am walking towards the stairs, hubby says wait I have a surprise for you, and hands me the extra vaccuum I have been waiting for (seriously I was)I even played UNO and bet my card hands for it. There it was with 2 pretty blue bows on it. I kissed my husband and said I will be right back. again WTH! I run up the stairs, without seeing my husbands look of disappointment and not even realizing that I had hurt him, not taking the time to think about the effort that he took to plan this evening for us, or how so very little times like that moment we actually have. He came upstairs, with a look of defeat and just like that the mood was gone. I had the gall to still believe I did nothing wrong. We ate dinner, he left to play tennis, and what should have been a perfect night, turned out to be crap. Of course we made up, but it goes to show that we are so entwined with ourselves that if we just took a moment to look around we may be able to see that we are possibly hurting the ones we love and the ones who support our decisions the most. Sensitivity issue #2
Day 3 (Wednesday)
Work! Why do people walk into someone else's office and whisper to another co-worker about what another co-worker did???? Arghhhhh! Or enter a room and never acknowledge you sitting in there, uhh, yeah you're in my office jerk face. Well I guess I better build up my backbone for the nursing field, because hey I've worked with these people for over 4 years, imagine working with different people everyday!! Sensitivity issue #3
Well that's it for now, with my update of the week, and my sensitivity issues. I am sure there will be plenty more, but for now I am cool. But, I will tell you that sensitivity comes on both ends, yours and the receiver, let's just try to keep it to a minimum. K?
